Macaroons are officially a food trend for 2012. They began sneaking into our subconscious last summer, appearing on the counters of vintage-style tea rooms, then in abundance on the Great British Bake Off. Thanks to Mrs Berry, the cupcake is so 2000 and late.
To keep up with the zeitgeist, behold a guide to the six best macaroon making courses in London.
Marvellous Macaroons @ L’atelier des Chefs. Six dates available in January for two-hour courses, 3pm-5pm, priced at £75 per person. Learn how to make chocolate and coconut ganache, lemon buttercream, peanut butter and raspberry and salted butter caramel varieties.
Magical Macaroons @ Waitrose Cookery School. On 3 Feb, 9:30am – 1:30pm, for £85. Despite my latter comment, you can also learn to make cupcakes on this course.
Macaroon Making @ School of Food. The school is so courteous it comes to your own kitchen. This private cookery class claims it will teach you the “black magic” behind perfect macaroons. Your tutor will bring all the ingredients and any special equipment required for the class. It’s £70 each for two people, £55 for three and £45 each for four.
Macaroon Making @ London Culinary Institute. For the more professional bakers among you, this is the ideal course. It looks fully booked at the moment, but worth checking back when new dates are added. It’s £99 for a day course, 9:00am – 2:45pm, where you’ll learn how to make, shape and flavour macaroons.
Cakes 4 Fun teaches monthly macaroon classes in Putney, 10am-4pm, costing £120. The next available date is 12 February.
Caroline Hope‘s classes take place at her home in Wells Street, London W1. During her two-hour macaroon masterclass you will be taken through the macaroon making technique and learn how to make two different flavours; a chocolate macaroon with chocolate ganache filling and a delicate pistachio macaroon with pistachio butter cream filling. It’s £44 per person, and the next available date is 10 Jan – morning and evening.

Thank you for this post. I honestly wish I had never tasted that flipping Laduree macaron in Paris as now I will spend my life trying to create one even half as good.
A really helpful post, much appreciated!!
Thanks, Sue, and good luck in your macaroon-making quest!
I went to a great macaron and martini making class run by Ohlala Macarons. They serve martinis throughout the class and have a bartender there who teaches you how to make the perfect martini to go with the macarons. It was so much fun! They do them all over London. I went to one in Covent Garden. I’m booking another one for a friend’s hen party this summer. Can’t wait!

Awww, I went to a macaron class by Ohlala-Macarons last month and I loved it! I’ve been recommending them to everyone ever since. The salted carmel and the melon macarons they had for us to eat throughout the class were so delicious. I’ve even managed to bake my own at home since. Not quite as pretty but still tasty!
