How to make mulled wine

mulled wine recipe

There are dozens of mulled wine recipes in my tattered old book, but this one is a favourite.

It is best served in a large slow cooker pot, kept at ‘warm’ setting.

What you need:

  • 2 bottles of 75 dl red wine (if you have homemade blackberry or elderberry wine this is beneficial)
  • 1 litre cranberry juice
  • Half litre lemonade
  • 2 lemons sliced
  • 1 orange studded with cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick or teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 3 oranges sliced
  • 8 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1.5 litre water

What to do:

Place all ingredients into a very large saucepan with 1.5 lt water and stir well until the sugar is dissolved. Simmer for about 15 minutes, but avoid the contents reaching boiling point. This works well being made in advance, then reheat very gently when ready to greet guests and serve, if possible, from a large slow-cooker pot, kept at warm temperature.

And it really is that simple. Bliss.
