When my boyfriend suggested we go and explore Streatham Common last Sunday - a short walk from our new house – I very nearly dragged him in the opposite direction towards the Crystal Palace triangle – a now well-beaten track for us. Images of vast, sparse expanses of grass was not appealing. Coffee and antique shops, however, were. Thankfully, I relented, and this is what I found…the most enchanting woodland and formal garden, just minutes away from my front door.

The Rookery sits on the former site of Streatham Spa, where locals would come and drink water from the springs for its healing properties. It became a public garden in 1913, and is on English Heritage‘s register of historic parks and gardens.

The autumn light shining through the surrounding woodland was simply beautiful.

The white garden was dotted with stunning white benches. I can only imagine what it’s going to look like in summer – I’m hoping for white roses.
